Stanley R. Schoonover, Conductor Stanley R. Schoonover was appointed Music Specialist for the Fairfax County (VA) Public Schools in August of 1998. In this role, he administers a music program that reaches 160,000 students, taught by more than 550 music educators. Prior to this appointment, he served as Director of Bands and Performing Arts Chairman at James W. Robinson, West Springfield and Mount Vernon High Schools for fifteen years, and Bangor (PA) High School for four years. Ensembles under his direction enjoyed 19 years of consecutive Superior ratings and national and international recognition for their outstanding performances, including the Mid-West International Band and Orchestra Clinic, three National Music Clinics, the Band of America National Concert Band Festival, the Mid-East Clinic, and the VMEA In-Service Conference. On three occasions, his bands have played for the President of the United States. Mr. Schoonover is the Founding Conductor of the Fairfax Wind Symphony@, an ensemble of music teachers and educators from the metropolitan DC area. The Fairfax Wind Symphony performs three concerts annually, and has been featured for the past five years as a clinic performing ensemble at the Virginia Music Educators Association [VMEA] In-Service Conference. Schoonover received his B.Sc. Degree, cum laude, in Music Education from Gettysburg College, and a Master of Music degree from West Chester University. Postgraduate work has included study at the University of Virginia, George Mason University, the University of Michigan, and Monticello University. He has studied conducting with Robert Zellner, Kenneth Laudermilch, Arnald D. Gabriel, William D. Revelli, H. Robert Reynolds and Anthony Maiello. Mr.
Schoonover has served as President of the Virginia Band and
Orchestra Directors Association, and the Fairfax County Band
Directors Association as well. He is the recipient of four
Citation of Excellence awards from the National Band
Association, the Medalist Stanbury Award, and the Mount
Vernon Teacher of the Year Award. He is a member of Phi Mu
Alpha, Phi Beta Mu, MENC, the American School Band Directors
Association, the National Band Association, and has been a
director for American Music Abroad. In October of 2004, Mr.
Schoonover was inducted into the East Stroudsburg High
School Music Hall of Fame. He is listed in both "Who's Who
in America" and "Who's Who in American Education". Playing
credits include the National Concert Band of America, the
City of Fairfax Band, and the Capitol Wind Symphony.
Publishing credits include VMEA Notes, the Red Apple, and
Yamaha New Ways. He is in demand as a clinician,
adjudicator, and conductor across the United States and
abroad. |
